Objectives

To develop a robust and high-throughput approach for screening consumer products (e.g. personal care products, textiles, cleaning sprays, polishes) and environmental media at sites contaminated by fire-fighting foams for PFAA-precursors. This will be accomplished through: a) development of a multi-matrix CIC method, and b) an advanced oxidation procedure for conversion of PFAA-precursors to PFAAs (including side-chain fluoroacylate polymers). Substances which form PFAAs following oxidation will be structurally elucidated by HRMS.

Planned secondment(s):

NGI (M14, 2 w) and SLU (M14, 2 w) for sampling of contaminated soils and groundwater.

UFZ (M22, 12w) for training on non-targeted mass spectrometry and chemometrics approaches.

Visit to a local wastewater treatment facility (Svenskt Vatten) (M12 following ATC3).

This ESR will also assist in the site visit to UFZ by all ESRs following ATC6 in M24.
